Heather Mackin's Obituary
Love. Light. Family. Fierce. Festive. Beauty. Courage. Life.
That is how Heather Underwood Mackin lived, since the day she was born in Dunedin, Florida October 23, 1970 to Robert and Joyce Underwood and that is how she died in the early morning hours of March 7, 2020. On her terms, in her home, surrounded by those she loved most in the world – her adoring husband Tom, her cherished daughters Holly & Julia, and her tiny, but mighty, little Lala. And looking far too young at 49 to have lost the battle with the disease she fought so incredibly hard to overcome.
But Heather didn’t let cancer define her – she defied it. Living every moment out loud – with joy – even on the days it didn’t come easily. You won’t read this and wonder if you met Heather. You’d know. She just had that effect on people. A chance encounter. A fellow football fan. A neighbor. A chemo companion. A stranger at a party. It didn’t matter. Her zest for life was infectious, and her magnetism just drew you right in. She exuded life, and effortlessly brought that out in everyone who was lucky enough to be part of hers, even if only for a moment. To have known Heather, is to love her.
Heather had profound connections with the people she loved, some of whom were taken from her much too soon – her twin sister Holly, sister Joy and her dad. She is survived by the love of her life Tom. And the absolute lights of her life – Holly & Julia – whose unbreakable bond is a perfect reflection of all Heather instilled in them. Oh, how proud she is of her two remarkable daughters. No doubt you will see so much of their Mama in all they do from this day forward. She also leaves behind her loving mother Joyce, her sister Judi Plaskett and brother Howard Underwood.
Heather’s family encourages you to share your memories of her at TrinityMemorial.com. Your words are powerfully healing at a time when this young family needs them most.
Perhaps the best memory to leave you with is words she left in her notes, to read as we shed a tear and manage a smile as we hear her voice:
When I am gone, release me let me go,
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had together so many years
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me and happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown, but now it is time that I travel alone.
So grieve for me a while, if you must grieve, then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part,
So bless those the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on,
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see me or touch me, you'll hear all my love around you soft and clear.
And then when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and, "Welcome Home."
