Dr. Gilbert William "Joe" Joseph's Obituary
Gilbert William “Joe” Joseph, Ph.D., MBA, CPA (retired), CISA (retired), Major USAF (retired) of Odessa, Florida, born December 17, 1943 in Niagara Falls, New York, died December 30, 2022. Dr. Joseph was a retired Full Professor Emeritus at The University of Tampa (UT) and had served in the endowed position of Dana Professor of Accounting.
Dr. Joseph received both his baccalaureate degree in accounting (Magna Cum Laude) and his Masters in Business Administration from Syracuse University. He was the first person to receive a Doctorate from the University of South Florida’s College of Business Administration, which he earned in accounting and management information systems. He was a Florida certified public accountant (CPA) and a certified information systems auditor (CISA).
In 1985, Joe retired from the United States Air Force as a highly decorated Major. He served in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. In 1980, he earned the prestigious award for “Distinguished Performance in Automatic Data Processing” by the American Society of Military Comptrollers.
During his tenure at UT, that started in 1986, he was recognized for outstanding scholarship, outstanding service, and earned the Louise Loy Hunter award as the university-wide outstanding faculty member. Joe served as the Interim Dean of the College of Business and spearheaded the college’s successful bid for accreditation by AACSB, the international business school accreditation association. Dr. Joseph published a book on analyzing financial statements, published academic and practitioner articles in over 50 journals and proceedings, and gave more than thirty presentations at professional conferences.
Dr. Joseph was an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the American Accounting Association (AAA), and served on the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). He was a frequent blood donor, having contributed more than 17 gallons of whole blood and platelets.
Dr. Joseph’s parents, Albert G. Joseph and Marie L. Joseph-Higgins are both deceased. He lost his wife of 43 years, Angie M. Joseph, to breast cancer in 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Christine L. Joseph of Tampa; and three brothers, Albert T. Joseph of El Paso, Texas, Reverend Paul P. Joseph of Sun City Center, Florida, and Jerald A. Joseph of Tampa, Florida.
Visitation will be held at Trinity Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 12609 Memorial Drive, Trinity, FL 34655 from 5-8 pm on Thursday, January 12 with an opportunity for sharing memorial testimonies at 6:30 pm. A brief service and interment will occur at 1 pm at Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Friday, January 13. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a donation be made to one of the following: the John H. Sykes College of Business at The University of Tampa, 401 W. Joe was respected and loved by those who knew him and will be greatly missed.
