WILLIAM G. MCDEVITT
William Garet (Gary) McDevitt, born October 26, 1934, of New Port Richey, Fl. passed away February 1, 2018. Gary was the Son of Bernard McDevitt & Stephanie McDevitt/Krivosta nee Lauer.
Gary joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 & was honorably discharged in 1954.
He became a New York City Policeman in Sept. 1960. After exceptional bravery during very dangerous situations, he earned the rank of Detective.
He was presented with the Combat Cross (the 2nd highest honor in the NYPD) by then Mayor Abe Beam. He served a total of 22 years on the force & retired 1982.
Although born & raised Catholic, he met the love of his life at Lorraine's St. Johns Lutheran Church, where they married on Sept. 11,1954. They raised their children in Brooklyn & Howard Beach, NY. After retirement they built a home Upstate NY. on the Delaware River, but shortly later visited Florida where they decided to spend their days. They sold the N.Y. house & bought a mobile home in Kite Circle, Corkscrew Woodlands, Estero, Fl. where they lived happily for 25 years. When Garys's health started to fail, they decided to move up to New Port Richey, FL to be closer to Son, Tom.
Gary was a wonderful & devoted husband & father. He was an outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, tennis player & avid reader.
After retirement from the NYPD he took on special undercover work tracking down unlawful oil & gas deliveries in the tri-state area. He also was head of security for the Forest Hills Tennis facility. After the move to Florida he became a full-time Charter Boat Captain out of Estero Bay.
Gary is survived by his wife Of 63 years, Lorraine, his Twin Sons Gary & Thomas, Daughters Laura Plappert & Lisa Karras. He has 9 Grandchildren, & 9 Great Grandchildren who live in N.Y. & Florida.
Gary will be cremated & his urn will be interred during a Military Burial Ceremony @ Bushnell Florida at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hope Hospice or The Alzheimers Foundation.
