Dr. Rainulf Alexander Stelzmann, 90, died peacefully in his Lutz home on Friday, July 31, 2015. Born in New Orleans, LA on Sept. 30, 1924, he was a devoted father of five, loving husband, and a lifetime scholar. He received his PhD from the University Of Freiburg in Germany in 1953, immigrated to the US, and married his wife Janet in New Orleans in 1957. He taught at Xavier University in New Orleans from 1956-1963, then moved to Tampa and taught at the University of South Florida until he retired as Professor Emeritus in Foreign Languages in 2001. His multiple publications included critiques of works from the baroque period, the contemporary American novel, and his autobiography. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet Hanley; his five children, Andrew Stelzmann, Mary S. Clark (Bill), Juliet S. Varnedoe (John), Susan S. Reynolds (John), Paul Stelzmann, and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until services at 1 PM on Friday August 7, at Trinity Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. Donations to Lifepath Hospice suggested in lieu of flowers.
