Phillip Hombledal's Obituary
Phillip John Hombledal, 85, of Odessa, Florida, peacefully entered into the presence of Our Lord on March 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and raised in Springfield, Illinois, Phil’s journey through life was one marked by creativity, kindness, and an unwavering sense of humor. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1958, he pursued college studies before proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1963, receiving an honorable discharge.
Phil was a man of many talents, particularly in the arts, where his gifts spanned across painting, drawing, graphic design, architectural model building, and theatrical set design. His work was recognized with accolades, including the 2005–2006 “Favorite Set Design” award from Richey Suncoast Theater for Cinderella. His stunning artistic contributions were also featured in publications such as the St. Petersburg Times and The Suncoast News, celebrating his intricate dioramas and theater sets.
Beyond the stage and canvas, Phil’s passion extended to model building, particularly his beloved model trains. His dedication to this craft earned him a feature in Dairy Queen Magazine, showcasing his meticulously designed Lionel train layout, a nostalgic tribute to the 1950s.
With a heart as big as his imagination, Phil was a man who made everyone feel welcome. He was quick to smile, a wonderful listener, and always ready with a lighthearted joke. He had a gift for bringing joy to others, whether through his artistry or simply through his warm and generous spirit.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, John Bishop and Helen Newsome Hombledal. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 45 years, Pam; his sister, Kay Lawley; his children, Phil (Kathy) Hombledal, Joy (Lee) Spiegel, Angela (Rich) Sheffer, and Bridget McGrath (Vaughn) Smith; and his cherished grandchildren: Erik Hombledal, Melodie Spiegel, Lauren and Melissa Sheffer, Meghan (Josh) Downing, Daren (Faith) and Tyler McGrath, Sedona and Vivianne Smith; and great granddaughter Isabeau McGrath. He is also fondly remembered by his extended family, Rebecca (Jonathon) Adams, along with Jay (Amber), Faith (Sean), Hope, and Haley.
Phil leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and artistic brilliance. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to shine through the many lives he touched.
