Mocsari, John's Obituary
John Mocsari passed away peacefully, among loving family, on Thursday, July 17, 2025. He was 95 years old and is survived by his daughter Karen; sons, John and Richard, and their spouses JoAnne and Laureen; and six amazing grandchildren.
John was born during the Great Depression in the coal mining town of Holden, West Virginia. He was one of six children of immigrant parents, who arrived in the United States through Ellis Island, NY, in the early 1900’s from Hungary. At the age of seventeen, following in his brothers’ footsteps, John enlisted in the US Navy and spent the next 20 years serving his country with honor during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded numerous medals during his time of service, including the National Defense Service Medal (Bronze Star), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe Clasp). After retiring from the Navy, John worked for New York City’s MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) in the Bronx, NY. Following his time at the MTA, John continued to serve our country, working with the US Navy’s Military Sealift Command as civilian on US Navy ships across the globe, including during the Persian Gulf War.
When John wasn’t enjoying his time with family, or time out at sea, he enjoyed old westerns, taking in ahorse race or a boxing match, and spending time with old friends.
John’s service to his country was a great source of pride. However, his most proud and greatest accomplishments were building a family with his beautiful wife of 53 years, Carol. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather. His quiet strength and resilience, never-ending hope, and a “they don’t make them like that anymore” kind of toughness, will never be forgotten.
With respect for John’s preferences, a service for the family will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to:
