James Murphy's Obituary
Mr. James M. Murphy, age 90, Spring Hill, FL passed away August 27th 2016 at his residence. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and a son of the late Thomas J. and Elizabeth Sullivan Murphy. He relocated to the Tampa Bay area in 1987.
Mr. Murphy proudly served his country during WWII as a member of US Army Air Corps and US Navy. He was a Catholic, attending Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Spring Hill, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Murphy’s passions were his family, his FBI service, and athletics. Prior to WWII, he was a Heavyweight Golden Gloves Champion and also pitched with the Red Sox minor league club. Over his long career, his FBI service as a Special Agent included such varied assignments as Field Agent, Inspector, Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Tampa Office, SAC of the Los Angeles Office, Quantico Instructor, SAC of the Washington DC Headquarters, National Spokesperson for the FBI, and Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI. He also served as Technical Director to the FBI TV Series, and as President of the Society of Former FBI agents.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Gloria Scherder Murphy, his son Thomas G Murphy and wife Ellen Gerrity of Bethesda, MD; his daughter Anne Marie Collins of Tampa, 4 grandchildren (Michelle Murphy, Christopher Murphy, Marianne Murphy, and Meghan Collins), his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Murphy, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his former wife of 32 years, Marie Murphy, his son Christopher M. Murphy, and his 5 siblings.
Services will be held Thursday September 1st, 2016.
