Herminio Garibay Saldajeno's Obituary
The Saldajeno family announced that their loving father, Herminio Garibay Saldajeno (aka “Sal”) passed away Monday, March 12, 2018, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He was 92 years old. Herminio was born January 8, 1926 on the island of Negros in Philippines. He was the second oldest of six brothers.
Sal was present on the island, along with his mother, father and brothers, during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II. As a survivor of the war, he attended the University of San Agustin to study pre-med. He then attend the University of Santo Thomas in Manilla, Phillipines and graduated at the top of his class and became a certified physician (MD) on September 15, 1955.
Sal immigrated to the United States in 1955 to continue his study of medicine and became a resident intern in Brooklyn New York at St. Catherine's Hospital, where he met his future wife, Mary Ann Smith. He continued his distinguished career, practicing medicine in New York and New Jersey, until his retirement to Florida in 1993.
Sal proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1966. Sal and Mary Ann loved to travel. They traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, the Philippines and other regions of the world during their retirement. They continued to travel until Mary Ann’s death in 2015.
Sal is survived by his brothers Wilfredo and Rogelio, and four children, Francis, Margaret, Michael and Anne. We will miss his dedication to being a father, support for all in his family who needed help, tireless energy, compassion, inner strength and his ability to make us smile.
