I was Grace’s hospital homebound teacher for several years. While I would like to believe that I taught her the mysteries of the universe, what I taught her is inconsequential compared to what she taught me. These are a few of the many lessons Grace taught me while I worked with her:
1. When you are happy, share it with others, always smile and lift others up.
2. If someone is sad, take their hand and share your strength.
3. When life is tough put on your brave face and power through, it will get better.
4. The world is a majestic place, look around and see the beauty.
5. The world is a better place when we spend time with those we love.
6. Surround yourself with things that bring you joy.
7. If someone starts talking about things you aren’t interested in and don’t want to hear about (mainly math), distract them to change the subject.
She taught me all these things and so much more. Grace always had a smile. She was beautiful from the inside, and it was evident every day with her contagious smile. She had a presence and listened with intent. When I was struggling with some internal issue, she would hold my hand, and I could feel the healing power of her love. She never missed an opportunity to see all the beauty in the people and the world around her. She loved to listen to stories and be outside to enjoy nature.
Grace had many challenges that would have made many bitter and sad. Not Grace. She handled every hurdle she faced with a strength others can only dream of. She is my hero and the world is a better place because of her love.
Grace loved reading and science. When we would start math, she would suddenly develop a twitch that would send her trach cover flying. I loved her mischievous side. She was subtle yet obvious all while smiling sweetly. She was truly a joy.
Graces total demeanor would change when her parents came into the room. She was ready for kisses and cuddling. You could feel the energy in the room shift and she only had eyes for them. The love was overwhelming.
Thank you Grace for all of your lessons and for your love. I will miss you and love you forever. Your friend, Ms. Loretta
