Evelyn Murray's Obituary
Evelyn Keller Murray, 93, passed away on August 3, 2015 at the Inn at University Village, Tampa, FL, where she resided.
Mrs. Murray was born February 26, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio, and was the only child of John William and Mattie Rickner Keller. After attending Ohio Wesleyan University for one year, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from The Ohio State University in 1943 and a Master of Arts in English from the Pennsylvania State University in 1965. From 1967 until her retirement in 1982, she taught English at State College High School (PA).
Evelyn married Robert K. Murray on December 7, 1943. She is survived by her husband of 72 years; her children Vicki McKeefery (Joseph) of Malvern, PA, William Murray (Suzanne) of Tampa, FL, and Constance Sargent (John) of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren (Michael, Kaitlyn, Alexander, Kyle, Jackson) and two great grandchildren (Joseph and Daniel).
Mrs. Murray was a 50-year-plus member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. In Pennsylvania, she was active in the State College Presbyterian Church, where she served as a circle leader as well as Church school teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the National Education Association, the Faculty Women’s Club, the Women’s Resource Center, and the Centre County Historical Association.
In Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where she lived part of the year during much of her adult life, she became a blue-water sailor, sailing the Caribbean with her family and later with just her husband. She was an active member of the Tortola Ladies’ Club, a life member of the Tortola Botanical Society, and a supporter of St. George’s Anglican Church.
