Ernestina Okalanque Perez, age 89, passed away peacefully on November 16th, 2025, in Tampa, Florida. She was born on October 6th, 1936, in Bolondrón, Matanzas, Cuba, where her remarkable journey first began.
A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Ernestina lived a life marked by courage, generosity, and unwavering love. In 1970, with extraordinary strength and determination, she left her beloved Cuba in search of a better life for her son, Reynaldo Alfonso, and her unborn son, Juan Carlos. With faith and resilience as her foundation, she built a new future for her family in the United States—never forgetting her roots and always finding ways to help those still in
her homeland.
Ernestina was a retired teacher’s aide who touched countless young lives with her patience and kindness. Outside of work, she embraced life with a joyful and giving spirit. She loved gardening, the ocean, and watching the sun set at the end of each day. She was super funny, loved poetry and dancing, and filled every room with her laughter and vibrant personality. A strong, independent, and deeply spiritual Catholic woman, she carried her faith with grace and lived it through her actions.
She was known for her incredible cooking, her beautiful singing voice, and the many
poems she recited—most often the verses of José Martí that she cherished deeply:
“Yo soy un hombre sincero,
De donde crece la palma,
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma.”
and
“Yo soy bueno
Y como bueno moriré
De cara al sol.”
Ernestina is survived by her loving sons, Juan Carlos Perez and Pastor Rafael Perez, and her daughters-in-law, Kelina Perez and Ani Perez. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren—Dacianna, Valeria, Rey, Julian, Eva, and Jailey—and her great-grandson, Rey Maha, who brought her immense joy. Her legacy of love, strength, and compassion lives on through each of them.
Ernestina will forever be remembered as one of the most generous women, a dancing machine with a poetic soul, and a mother who gave everything she had to those she loved. Her memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with those she loved, carried home by the verses she held so close to her heart.

Madre, abuela y bisabuela devota, Ernestina vivió una vida marcada por el valor, la generosidad y un amor inquebrantable. En 1970, con una fuerza y determinación admirables, dejó su amada Cuba en busca de una vida mejor para su hijo, Reynaldo Alfonso, y para su hijo por nacer, Juan Carlos. su risa y su radiante personalidad. Mujer fuerte, independiente y profundamente espiritual, vivió su fe católica con gracia y la
expresó a través de sus acciones.
Era conocida por su increíble sazón, su hermosa voz al cantar y los poemas que recitaba—principalmente los versos de José Martí, que atesoraba profundamente:
