Doug was a kind giving person and good friend of mine for over 30 years.
He was a hard worker and was known in the restaurant business as ‘Super
Doug’ because of how much he could accomplish when something needed
to be done, which with restaurants was usually every day. Many people can
attest to the fact that he had a habit of teasing people he cared about and
expected you to tease him back. He was also a master schemer.
We shared many long nights standing in line outside of a store to insure
we got one of the coveted items a few lucky shoppers could purchase when
the store opened the next day. We were into buying Pokemon cards when
they first came out, but were into Beanie Babies and Beanie Baby cards
long before that and stood in line overnight to get special Beanie Babies
(the Purple Princess Di bear, etc). Yes, we were into Black Friday sales back
in the days of truly super deals and stood in line overnight at Best Buy many
years, even starting sometimes early Thanksgiving afternoon. We had a great time getting rewards from recycling ink cartridges at Staples and started some long-lasting friendships with the staff. I moved Doug many times in Tallahassee, also to a job in Roswell, Georgia and from there to his next job in Jacksonville, Florida, but the most memorable ‘Doug Scheme’ we shared was when I helped him buy Hershey’s candies from as far away as Virginia to help him win a new Chrysler Crossfire sports car. Like the true friend he was, he insisted I drive the car first; even before he drove it (a very cool car and an unforgettable friend).
Doug, you are truly deeply missed. Rest peacefully my brother.
