Whenever Frank and I were in New Port Richey, we never missed a chance to spend time with Chris and Chrissy. We shared so many meals, stories, and laughs together--it was always a good time. during Hurricane Helene and Milton, they welcomed us into their home without hesitation, and we'll never forget that kindness. My dad once killed a snake by accident. He was terrified of snakes.
He was walking through the yard with a shovel, saw the snake suddenly, and without even thinking, just pure reflex, he threw the shovel. It hit the snake perfectly and killed it.
But the part that stayed with me wasn't the throw.
It was how he told the story afterward.
Every time he retold it, years later, decades later, he'd get this look on his face and say, with real regret in his voice, "And the snake looked at me like… 'Why did you do this to me? What did I do to you?'"
That moment lived in him. And I think it says everything about who he was. Even when he acted without thinking, his heart caught up. He felt things deeply. He was never cruel. He cared about the small, quiet, overlooked lives. Even the snake.
