Catherine “Dukie” Schanz, 88
Catherine McCabe Schanz, “Dukie” of New Port Richey, FL, formerly of Madison, N.J. passed away on July 3, 2016 in Brooksville, FL. Cathy was born on December 15, 1927 in South Orange, NJ to Della and Joseph McCabe. She grew up in Millburn, NJ.
In 1951 she married Henry “Duke” Schanz. Cathy was a dedicated mom and homemaker and then a bookkeeper and secretary for Ace Press. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, knitting, (especially beautiful Christmas stockings), growing gorgeous houseplants, gardening, baking for friends and family, reading and caring for her numerous pets over the years. She and Duke were married 32 years until his death in 1983.
Her sister, Rosemary Zimmerman, also preceded Cathy in death. Cathy, is survived by her sister, Honor Kammerer (Richard) and her brother, John Laverty (Bette), her daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Bill DeGrosky of Wilmington, DE and Gretchen and Cris Smith of Brooksville, FL., her grandchildren, Jen DeGrosky (Artimus) and Lauren DeGrosky, Dan Smith (Christy), Drew Smith (Ryane) and Hillary Smith and her great-grandchildren Hayden and Emma. Catherine will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and her dear friend, Lynn Dever.
Debbie and Gretchen wish to thank the staff at The Grande in Brooksville for their exceptional care and support of Mom during this final stage of her life.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 8320 Old Co Rd 54 in New Port Richey, FL on Monday, July 18 at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations may be made to Reading Assist Institute, Arthritis Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association.
