Carmen Alice Anderson's Obituary
Carmen Alice Anderson, 97, of New Port Richey, FL, passed away on January 9, 2025. Carmen, better known as “Alice,” was born on January 25, 1927, in Mexico City, Mexico, to Gilberto and Carmen DeGloria, one of two siblings with her brother Gilbert DeGloria. During her long and rich life, Alice resided in Mexico City, New York City, Fort Lee, Washington Township, Hillsdale, and Sparta, New Jersey, and Tarpon Springs, FL, before living out her final days in New Port Richey, FL. She graduated from Secretarial High School in New York City in 1945. She married Douglas Haig Anderson in 1948, and the couple started a family, with the birth of their children, Susan, Douglas Jr., and Heather. When the children were young, Alice focused on providing for their daily care and maintaining the family household. As the children grew older and more independent, Alice entered the workforce as a secretary in the government sector, primarily with Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township, NJ, where she received several official commendations for exceptional performance from the Department of the Army during her tenure. She remained devoted to her husband Doug until his passing in 2020.
Alice will be remembered as a generous and caring person, who always took the time to listen and help others. Wherever she went, people noticed and loved her sweet nature. Throughout her life, she demonstrated the courage and strength needed to overcome challenges and modeled patience when teaching herself and her children. Her faith was an important part of her life, and wherever she lived, she found a church community. Over the years, she was a member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church in Hillsdale, NJ, First Presbyterian Church of Sparta, NJ, Northwood Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, FL, Hope United Methodist Church in Trinity, FL, and most recently The Chapel in Trinity, FL.
Alice was an active woman with a wide variety of interests. With her natural creativity and artistic skill, she became skillful at any craft she tried her hand at, from sewing, crocheting, and knitting to ceramics, leaving countless handcrafted keepsakes for her family to remember her by. She loved dancing and bowling. She was an excellent baker, and it was a widely known fact that she had an extraordinary sweet tooth. She enjoyed traveling, especially taking cruises around the Caribbean. She kept her mind engaged and informed by completing wordsearch puzzles and watching national and world news but also allowed herself to unwind by watching Hallmark movies. Most of all, she loved gatherings, where she could spend time with family and friends, sharing stories and laughing, especially at her own jokes.
Alice is survived by her children Susan Anderson, Doug Anderson Jr., and Heather (Flo) Anderson; her grandchildren Jesse (Jacob) LaMotta, Carly McElveen, Desirae Anderson, Douglas Anderson III, and Kayleigh Anderson; her four great-grandchildren; and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Haig Anderson, her parents Gilberto and Carmen DeGloria, and her brother Joseph Gilbert DeGloria.
