Alvin Hillegass' Obituary
Alvin L. Hillegass, “Al”, age 97, of Tarpon Springs, FL, went home to be with his Lord on July 30, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 27, 1926, in Christy Park, McKeesport, PA, he was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.
Al was a man of remarkable character and unwavering faith. A proud veteran who served in the Navy during WWII, he served his country with honor and commitment. Al worked in the Steel industry for 51 years. He started his career with US Steel and worked his way up through management ultimately ending as Group Vice President of all Steel making operations. After his long and successful career at US Steel, Al went on to own and operate 3 prosperous companies. His diligence and expertise earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and partners, and his mentorship has inspired many throughout his long life. He had a deep love for his church and was involved with many charities and mission organizations. Al was an avid golfer, sailor, bridge player and animal lover.
Al’s greatest joy was his family. He was married to Elizabeth Hillegass for 30 years, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. He was a devoted father to his children, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His family will forever treasure his wisdom, generosity, love and the countless moments of joy he brought into their lives.
Al is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth Hillegass, sister Marilyn Yungk, children Carolyn Hart, Ross Hillegass (Sharon), Judith Crain (Peter Lirot), Jill McLane (Tim Barone), Josh McLane (Alejandrina), Justin McLane (Christina), 20 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of friends and extended family who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Mary Hillegass, and former wife, Joanne Hillegass.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on August 24, 2024 at Lakeview Church, Tarpon Springs, FL, with a reception to follow at Cypress Run Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, and honoring Al’s spirit of generosity, he requested donations be made to Lakeview Church and/or AccentCare Hospice.
Al’s legacy of love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
