Abdul Gafur's Obituary
Aziz Abdul Gafur
December 6, 1938 – January 15, 2025
Abdul Aziz Gafur, better known as Gaf, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren.
Born in Guyana on December 6, 1938, Gaf dedicated his career to the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Home Affairs. He was instrumental in uplifting underdeveloped communities, enabling the development of utility services, public infrastructure, and essential health programs such as immunization initiatives. He also played a pivotal role in coordinating farming and food services, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. He later sacrificed his successful career to relocate to New York, where he worked tirelessly and successfully to build a better life for his family. His passion for gardening was evident in the bountiful harvests he shared with family, friends, and neighbors—a true testament to his generosity and love of nature.
Gaf was known for his kindness, selflessness, and remarkable sense of humor. He had a unique ability to brighten any room he entered and leave a lasting smile on the faces of those he met. He was also a treasured mentor to many whom he influenced profoundly, leaving an enduring impact on their lives.
An active member of the local Senior Center, he devoted much of his time to supporting his community, fostering friendships, and lending a helping hand whenever needed.
After the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Iris, in 2012, Aziz honored her memory daily, cherishing their love and visiting her resting place weekly with flowers. His final words have come to pass: "I've lived a full life and proud of my children. I'm ready to go home to your mom." Now, they are reunited peacefully together once more.
Gaf is survived by his children: Sharon and Thomas Oderwald, Sandra Gafur and Marc Couture, Sally and Thomas Dolan, Dennis and Seema Gafur, Steve Gafur, Indira, and Jerry Gafur; his beloved grandchildren: Josephine and Violet, Steven and Jason, Tommy and Katie, Emily and Ethan, Stephanie, Julian, Jared, and Joshua and great-granddaughter Gisyel; along with numerous loving relatives and friends who will carry forward his legacy of love, kindness, and laughter.
Dad, you will forever be in our hearts.
