I don't personally know John but share a love for him through my love of Andrea Gavin Becker – a dear friend and wonderful person who spoke of her lung donor angels with such profound gratitude. I hope he knew all the lives he peripherally touched and bettered by his selflessness – I'm certainly among them. xox
I'm so sorry to hear the news of John's passing. I only knew of him when---19 years ago---I heard the story of how he had donated a lobe of his lung to Andrea Gavin Becker. That made John an instant hero in my book. It was a brave and selfless act. Sending waves of sympathy and gratitude to the family.
My family is eternally grateful for the gift he gave to my niece Andrea Gavin, the gift of life, when he so generously donated a lobe of his lung so that she would live. Thank you John, you are blessed, and a blessing.
John unbelievably and selflessly saved my life in 1998 when he donated a piece of his lung to me when I needed a double lung transplant. He made it possible to keep living a wonderful life, going strong 19 years later. His beautiful gift will always humble me. I promise to carry it on and keep living life as fully as possible, in thanks and with love to him.

John & Lila were our close friends for many years. On several occassions, I met their lovely family members & especially their delightful grandchildren. When Lila passed away in 2010, I was so pleased that John met & married Marilyn.
After sharing many conversations with John, I will always remember his highly intelligent insight on many topics.
I will never forget our Caribbean trip with John & Lila . John discarding his trunks on Orient beach, St. Martin & his dashing "au naturel" into the surf...
May he rest in peace on other shores & may his love ones find comfort in their cherished memories.
